Critical Points for Interviewing Singing InstructorsThe music industry is a vast wondrous animal that if not approached correctly, can bite you hard. When I worked in band promotion, one thing continually came across my brain as an incite-full question that I needed to define. I asked some of my lead singers in various bands, what defines quality singing instructors? Many of them had various answers, but there were key ingredients that were congruent throughout. These questions pertained to recordings, musical training, singing exercises, number of students and ignition of “your” voice. How many times have you interviewed singing instructors and they have never been recorded, or at least couldn’t prove it? When interviewing singing instructors, have them show you their musical training documentation. And so another vital question to ask is “how many other current students they have”.This question I believe is the kicker in the conversation. Based on there answer, you will know whether to kick them out and move on or keep them in and ask more questions to get to your decision. Their philosophy is paramount in the questions you can ask when interviewing them. If their philosophy does not include “igniting your voice”, move on. You are aware that not all voices are created equal. They have to train your voice to improve, not to train it to sound like someone else. Otherwise you sound like every other karaoke singer at the local bar on Friday night… |
