My first glance of music terminology and symbols led me to believe that I was once again watching reruns of Sesame Street and reliving my night-marish (I know, not a word) school days in math class. Music terminology is certainly a language of its own. Can you tell what the letter “p”, or “pp”, or the words “mezzo”, “forte” or “crescendo” mean? If you are a relatively seasoned music aficionado then you will , however, as a beginner or one that is just wanting to learn the basics of singing and music, then this article should make your singing and music learning experience more enjoyable.

Ask yourself the definition of piano. I know, it’s the instrument with the black and white keyboard that made Beethoven famous. The number 1 definition of piano in the dictionary is “to play or sing softly.” Silly me.It is denoted by the letter p. Other piano related terms include “Mezzo Piano” for moderately soft and denoted by the symbol mp. While “pianissimo” means playing or singing very softly and is denoted by the letters pp.

On the other hand, when one needs to sing louder, it will be denoted by an f in the music score. This stands for “Forte” meaning to play or sing loudly. “Fortissimo” is denoted by ff and means to play or sing very loudly. To sing between Forte and Fortissimo, one is said to be singing “Mezzo Forte”, which is moderately loud and is denoted by the symbol mf. The symbols are to let the singer know how loudly they can sing in order to have the desired result in how the music is expressed. You will be surprised how just knowing these basic terms will help you to improve your singing.

Now onto some “math” symbols. Decrescendo and Crescendo are music symbols that are denoted by the signs “>” and “
Author: David Kahan

To be a better singer, you need to think about what it is you really want to achieve. Do you want to sing as a hobby or would you like to take it further? Do you have any long terms goals regarding a singing career? When thinking about these important issues, you may also want to think about the following points:

Who do you compare yourself to?

Do you have a regular vocal exercise routine?

Who do you compare yourself to?

It is important to know who you compare yourself to so that you are singing songs that are appropriate to the style of voice you have. The best way to do this is to ask a family member or friend to listen to you sing two or three different types of songs. You may think you sing for example, jazz really well, when in actual fact, your voice is far better suited to musical theatre. Do this as soon as possible so you don’t waste your time singing the wrong types of songs. Success will be yours as long as you sing what is suitable for your voice.

Do you have a regular vocal exercise routine?

Are you putting aside time every week in your schedule to do singing exercises and routines? This is so important because you need to build up your vocal strength and power. This can only be achieved through regular and dedicated vocal exercises. It is no good just doing a quick warm up and launching straight into your songs. You will definitely do more harm than good and your voice may not last as long as it should and you could end up with serious vocal problems such as nodules.

So knowing what type of sound your voice makes and having a good and regular vocal exercise routine in place will bring you that much closer to being a better singer.

Why Get Singing Lessons?

If you already sing very well, then you may wonder whether or not it is a good idea for you to devote the time and money necessary to get singing lessons. Generally speaking, even the best singers can benefit from the guidance of an instructor or professional program. Many of today’s biggest singing sensations not only started out with singing lessons, but continue to get coaching to better develop their voices.
It may be helpful to think in terms of sports. Even the most naturally gifted athlete needs to learn the rules of the game. In addition, athletes spend much more of their time practicing than they do in competition. They work with coaches and trainers to perfect their skills and to learn new ones. Singing lessons work in precisely the same fashion for those who want to enhance their singing abilities.
Like the athlete’s muscles, a singer’s vocal cords need training to reach their full potential. Those who don’t use the proper techniques can actually cause damage to their vocal cords, so singing lessons are especially important to avoid this outcome. Some singers actually develop nodules on their vocal cords as a result of improper technique.
It is important to note that not all vocal coaches are created equal. Individuals who wish to take singing lessons to improve their abilities need to do their homework when it comes to choosing a coach or a program. Be sure to contact others who have utilized the same instructor or look for feedback on a particular program. Unfortunately, those who do not know what they are doing can create just as much, if not more, damage to a singer’s vocal cords as the untrained singer can.
A final concern for those who choose not to get singing lessons is the likelihood of developing “bad” habits. These may not be terribly limiting if your kids are your biggest audience, but if you intend to audition for a local theatre, church choir, or singing contest, they can definitely hold you back. Again, an unqualified vocal coach can actually reinforce bad habits, so make sure you are utilizing a program that is tried and true.
While there are many reasons to consider getting singing lessons, the biggest one has to do with personal desire. Whether you want to feel good about singing in the shower, or you plan to be the next big Broadway sensation, singing lessons can help you reach the level that is comfortable to you.

It’s time to take the plunge and call a reputable Singing Teacher if you have the urge to improve your voice or you have that dream to become performer on stage or television.

But, if you feel that you need to develop some more confidence before you talk to a Singing Specialist then why not search the internet, maybe using Google or Yahoo, and get hold of some easily downloadable Singing Exercises. All you have to do is type “Singing Exercises” or “Vocal Exercises” into the Search Engine and you’re on your way to developing some confidence with your singing.

Spend a few days practising your breathing and vocal exercises in a quiet spot in your house or even copy them to a CD and practise in your car on your way to work or school. At the beginning, don’t practise in front of others because they may be too critical which might discourage you from pursuing your dream.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly your voice can improve as you practise the breathing, phrases, vowel sounds, scales and arpeggios.

Once your voice starts to improve with the Singing Exercises, it’s time to download some Backing Tracks or even some Karaoke files which are easy to find on the net and are particularly easy to play in MIDI format on your computer. You can even download a free Karaoke Player like the one at VanBasco.com. This player even allows you to change the pitch and tempo, tailoring the backing to your needs. Most MIDI files even have a melody which you can mute later when you are more practiced.

Once you’ve developed some confidence, then you’re ready to call a qualified, professional teacher in your area. Your Singing Teacher will take you through the next steps to becoming a better singer and maybe you will be the next Idol, making your own CDs, performing like a STAR on stage and TV! Or, maybe you will be proud of yourself for downloading those exercises and improving your voice just for you. All the best and keep aiming high and you’ll be head closer to achieving your ultimate goals!

There are many activities that improve memory and singing seems to be one of them. Singing determines memory improvements in several ways. First of all, singing is associated with a lower heart beat rate. In this situation, people who are singing to improve memory are discovered to not have many problems related to hypertension.

When the heart beat rate exceeds a certain limit, people may become stressed. In conclusion, singing can also reduce stress, which is a major cause of memory disorders. Singing to improve memory affects both the psychological and physical conditions that the persons may have. Most of these health problems may lead to memory loss.

As some studies have revealed, the best are results are observed in older persons who are singing to improve memory. Because the music can change the mood and increase the energy, the depression levels drop considerably. These are also ways to improve memory, because depression represents the most frequent cause of memory loss. While singing, people may discover that they improve their life in several ways. They are able to breathe with a greater ease, and the tone, as well as the quality of the voice does not deteriorate, but even more, they are improved.

The division of the brain that is responsible with singing is separated from the one that is related to speech. In conclusion, people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease may use singing to improve memory. Although these people may have lost the ability to communicate, they can still find music enjoyable.

People who are singing to improve memory also seem to have an enhanced immune system. Their overall mood is also changed. The lung capacity of people who are singing to improve memory seems to be larger than in the other people. Furthermore, another factor that affects that immune system is represented by the level of immunoglobin A and cortisol. These two substances usually mark an improved immune system. The levels of these substances seem to be higher after singing.

Only listening to the music does not lead to the same results. In addition, people who are singing to improve memory may also discover that the symptoms of asthma improve, in case they suffer from this disease. However, one of the most important results of singing remains the decrease of the depression levels. Singing helps people to relax, to change their mood and to increase the confidence. All these lead to a better memory.

If any time you feel like singing, whether in the shower, in the car or even in your neighbor’s infamous karaoke night, you must go ahead and sing. This is an ancient art that not only makes you feel good but also reduces your pain, rejuvenates and ensures your well-being and even prolongs your life span. Using your voice for singing and not only for conversations has a number of benefits.
There has been many studies and research completed on the relationship between singing and reduction in blood pressure, lessened stress level, and less rapid heartbeat. When a singer sings a favorite song there is an immediate lessening of tension and stress levels, which is one of the benefits of releasing emotions. Singing can assist us to calm down and chill out, so that we can relieve some depression and feel happier.
Some people in the medical professions consider singing as a way to encourage fitness which helps strengthen the abdomen, circulation, and breath support. When one sings, emotions tend to be released, which helps with those with physical or psychological problems. Some people who have experienced a stroke may have some change for the better as they improve in breathing and as well as the way they communicate with others.
The Alzheimer’s Society believes in the concept of singing therapy. Chreanne Montgomery-Smith organized Singing for the Brain, which was organized especially for dementia or Alzheimer patients. Singing helps foster a feeling of well-being as well as a venue for personal expression that releases stress.
There are two portions of the brain that produce speech separately from the ability to comprehend music. It is possible for some people who cannot speak or express themselves through speech that can still take great delight and satisfaction in listening to their favorite music. Also, some studies demonstrated results which illustrate that singing boosts health and feelings of well being, which is great for people of all ages.
Singing can help seniors deal with issues with aging such as a boost in self-esteem and purpose when they sing with groups or solo. It is a great way to add the quality of a senior’s life, as the recent movie Young at Heart can concur. From singing, one can benefit from improved lung capacity, asthma relief, better posture, high energy.
When one sings, it can help build up and support the lungs and diaphrgam so that the lungs hold more air. Hormones called endorphins can be released into the blood, which can also be a big boost to good breath support. Those who experience breathing troubles should try and join a chorus or choir (or sing on their own) so that they can enhance their physical and mental health.
Music therapy can include singing as a therapeutic interest that is applied in some of the health areas. Inquiries and certain investigations have revealed that it provides relief in those dealing with dementia, those suffering from prolonged sadness and negativity, stress ailments, and increasing the physical immune system. Realize that, if you sing regularly, you could be doing yourself a big favor in promoting a happy and longer life.

Self esteem is a hot topic for parents of teens, and many have found that enrolling their kids in singing lessons or other kinds of music lessons can be a real boost to how kids feel about themselves. There are several advantages for teens who get involved in these types of activities. Whether it is the ability to meet new people, or the pride that comes from learning a new skill, singing lessons have been shown to make a difference in how kids see themselves.
Singing lessons offer teens a way to get out and meet new people, which can be key to expanding their social circles and helping them find new ways to “fit in.” They are often able to meet other teens who also have an interest in music, either through the singing lessons or by joining a choir or chorus. In addition, the confidence that comes as a byproduct of public performances can do wonders to improve self esteem. Both being part of a group and having individualized attention during lessons can bolster a teen’s self esteem.
Surprisingly, becoming more educated in the musical arts can spill over into other aspects of a teen’s education. Numerous studies have shown that kids who learn how to read music actually have an improved ability to understand mathematics. The result is a deeper understanding of other school subjects, and therefore the potential for higher grades. Again, this type of scholastic improvement has great potential to impact the teen’s overall sense of self.
Finally, singing lessons have the ability to improve self esteem in teens by the very virtue of being fun. Kids who discover that they have musical talent also find that they have a new-found source of pride. Even those who are not concert-ready often enjoy the process so much that it can help to bring them out of their shells and to enhance the way they see themselves. For those who have the opportunity to enjoy singing lessons, it seems that the outcome includes a whole lot more than just a better singing voice!
